How to Play

A magic square is a grid filled with distinct numbers where the sums of numbers in each row, each column, and both main diagonals are equal to the same value (called the "magic constant").

Gameplay:

• Fill in the empty cells with numbers to complete the magic square.
• Each number can only be used once in the square.
• The magic constant is displayed at the top of the game.
• Use the number pad or type numbers directly into cells.

Controls:

• Click on a cell to select it, then click a number from the pad or type a number.
• Drag and drop numbers from the pad to cells.
• Use arrow keys to navigate between cells.
• Press Enter to confirm your number or Delete/Backspace to clear a cell.

Ancient Origins

The earliest known magic square comes from China over 2000 years ago. The Lo Shu Square (3×3) was associated with the Yellow River and had great cultural significance.

Islamic and Indian Mathematics

Magic squares spread to India and the Islamic world by the 9th century. Arab mathematicians like Ahmad al-Buni wrote about their mystical properties and uses in astrology.

European Renaissance

By the 15th century, magic squares appeared in Europe. Famous mathematicians like Cornelius Agrippa wrote about squares of orders 3 through 9, associating them with the seven classical planets.

Modern Mathematics

Today, magic squares are studied in combinatorics and recreational mathematics. They've inspired Sudoku and other puzzle games, and have applications in statistics and experimental design.
