Understanding Image Metadata
This tool extracts and displays metadata embedded in your image files. Metadata provides valuable information about how, when, and where your photos were created. If you need to remove sensitive metadata before sharing, we offer a dedicated tool for that purpose.
EXIF Data
Technical camera settings: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, camera model, and capture date/time. Essential for photographers analyzing their work.
IPTC Data
Descriptive information: copyright, creator, keywords, captions, and location details. Used by media professionals for asset management.
GPS Data
Geographic coordinates showing where the photo was taken. Note: Some images may have this data removed for privacy reasons using our metadata removal tool.
Supported Image Formats & Metadata Behavior
Best Metadata Support
- JPEG/JPG: Full EXIF, IPTC, and XMP support. Most cameras save in this format with complete metadata.
- TIFF: Extensive metadata support, often used in professional photography workflows.
- HEIC/HEIF: Modern format with metadata support (requires browser compatibility).
Limited Metadata
- PNG: Basic metadata support. Often loses camera EXIF data during conversion, especially when using an image converter tool.
- WebP: Supports metadata but may not preserve all original EXIF information.
- GIF: Very limited metadata support due to format constraints.
Your Images Stay Private
Client-Side Processing
This tool operates entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your images are never uploaded to any server - all processing happens locally on your device.
No Data Collection
We don't store, analyze, or transmit your images or metadata. The tool works offline after initial load, making it ideal for sensitive or confidential images.
Technical Implementation
Metadata extraction uses the open-source exifr library running locally. Image previews are generated using browser FileReader API without external dependencies.
For enhanced privacy, you can also use our secure image encryption tool to protect sensitive visual data.
Privacy Features
- No image uploads
- No server processing
- No tracking or analytics
- Works offline
- No registration required
Common Use Cases
- Photography Analysis: Review camera settings and shooting conditions
- Privacy Check: Verify if images contain GPS location data
- Asset Management: Extract copyright and creator information
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose image quality issues from capture settings
- Forensic Analysis: Verify image authenticity and origin
Tool Limitations
- Maximum file size: Browser-dependent (typically 2-4GB)
- Some metadata fields may not display if improperly formatted
- Encrypted or proprietary metadata may not be readable
- GPS map display requires internet connection
- Very old or corrupted metadata may not parse correctly

Resolution Handling
Image dimensions are read from metadata when available. Preview images are resized for display but original file dimensions are preserved in metadata extraction.
File Size Considerations
Large images (>50MB) may take longer to process. The tool handles files efficiently by reading only metadata, not decoding full image data.
Browser Compatibility
Works on modern browsers (Chrome 80+, Firefox 75+, Safari 14+, Edge 80+). Some features may vary based on browser image handling capabilities.
