Understanding Triangle Congruence

Triangle congruence means two triangles have exactly the same size and shape. When triangles are congruent:

All corresponding sides are equal in length
All corresponding angles are equal in measure
The triangles can be superimposed exactly on one another
They have the same area and perimeter

However, we don't need to check all six parts (3 sides + 3 angles). Congruence rules tell us the minimum information needed to prove congruence.

Side Labeling:

a = side opposite angle A
b = side opposite angle B
c = side opposite angle C

Angle Labeling:

∠A = angle at vertex A (opposite side a)
∠B = angle at vertex B (opposite side b)
∠C = angle at vertex C (opposite side c)

Important Constraints:

Triangle inequality: a + b > c, a + c > b, b + c > a
Angle sum: ∠A + ∠B + ∠C = 180°
Angles: 0° < angle < 180°
Sides: length > 0

Use consistent units (all sides same unit)
Angles in degrees (0-180°, exclusive)
For decimal precision: use 0.01 for sides, 0.1° for angles

Congruence Rules Matrix

SSS (Side-Side-Side)

Requires: All three sides

Logic: If a₁ = a₂, b₁ = b₂, c₁ = c₂, then Δ₁ ≅ Δ₂

SAS (Side-Angle-Side)

Requires: Two sides and the included angle

Note: Angle must be between the two sides

ASA (Angle-Side-Angle)

Requires: Two angles and the included side

Note: Side must be between the two angles

AAS (Angle-Angle-Side)

Requires: Two angles and a non-included side

Logic: If 2 angles match, 3rd angle automatically matches

HL (Hypotenuse-Leg)

Requires: Right triangle with hypotenuse and one leg

Special: Only for right triangles (has 90° angle)

Note: SSA (Side-Side-Angle) is NOT a valid congruence rule (except when it's HL for right triangles). It can produce ambiguous cases.

Example Problem: Determine if ΔABC (a=5, b=7, c=8) is congruent to ΔXYZ (x=5, y=7, z=8)

Step 1: Compare side lengths: a=5 vs x=5, b=7 vs y=7, c=8 vs z=8
Step 2: Check SSS rule: All three sides are equal
Step 3: Since SSS condition is satisfied, triangles are congruent
Step 4: By congruence, corresponding angles are also equal
