About Passive Voice

Passive voice occurs when the subject of the sentence is acted upon rather than performing the action. While sometimes appropriate, overuse can make writing seem weak or indirect.

Example:

Passive: "The ball was thrown by John."
Active: "John threw the ball."

This tool uses pattern matching to identify common passive constructions, including:

  • Forms of "to be" (is, are, was, were) + past participle
  • Phrases containing "by" that indicate the actor
  • Common passive constructions in English
