Understanding Pedigree Charts
A pedigree chart is a diagram that shows the occurrence and appearance of phenotypes of a particular gene or organism and its ancestors from one generation to the next.
Standard Symbols:
- Square: Male individual
- Circle: Female individual
- Filled shape: Affected by the trait
- Half-filled shape: Carrier of the trait
- Horizontal line: Marriage/mating line
- Vertical line: Line of descent
Inheritance Patterns:
- Autosomal Dominant: Affected individuals in every generation
- Autosomal Recessive: Skips generations, more common with consanguinity
- X-linked: More males affected, no male-to-male transmission
Using This Tool
Start by adding individuals one at a time. Be sure to specify parents for children to create proper connections in the pedigree. The chart will automatically arrange individuals by generation.
Tip: Use standard numbering like I-1, I-2 for generation 1, II-1, II-2 for generation 2, etc.
