How to Use This Tool

Measure the length and width of your roof. For gable roofs, this is the length along the ridge and the width from eave to eave.

Select the correct roof shape and specify if you're measuring one side or both sides of the roof.

Roof pitch affects the actual surface area. Common pitches are 4:12, 6:12, or 8:12.

You can enter pitch as a ratio (rise:run) or as an angle in degrees.

Flat roofs should select "Flat (No Pitch)".

Choose your roofing material type from the dropdown.

Each material has different coverage specifications:

  • Shingles: Typically sold in bundles covering ~33 sq ft
  • Metal Sheets: Specify sheet dimensions
  • Tiles: Coverage per tile and tiles per square
  • Rolls: Specify roll dimensions
  • Custom: Enter your own coverage values

Waste Percentage: Add 10-15% for typical roofs to account for cuts and overlaps.

Complexity Factor: More complex roofs require more material due to additional cuts.

Accessories: Include starter strips and flashing if needed.

Output Units: Choose how you want to see the results (bundles, squares, or area).

Once you have your roof area calculated, you might also find our pipe volume estimator useful for gutter calculations, or check the density of common building materials to better understand weight loads. For more detailed structural planning, our beam load calculator can help ensure your roof structure meets code requirements.
